Some background about the masks:


It is said that no one producers a wider range of masks than the people of Côte d’Ivoire. The masks are used to represent the souls of deceased people, lesser deities, or caricatures of animals. Only powerful individuals or families or specially trained individuals are permitted to wear those masks. You might be thinking, why do they need to be specially trained just to wear a mask? - Because the ‘myth’ (and I use that word cautiously) is that each mask has a soul or a life force. When a persons face comes in contact with the inside of the mask, that person becomes the entity that the mask represents.
